On the Inlet - Review from Beachfoodguide.com

No trip to Port Douglas is complete without a visit to the Groper Bar at 5pm to watch George getting fed. George is a very large groper, think small car, and literally makes a big splash during the 15 or so minutes of the feeding.

The event is a popular tourist attraction, so if you're smart you will arrive early and set up on a table near the bridge and order a couple of icy cold drinks from the bar before the crowd arrives. And if you're really smart you will book a table at On the Inlet, the seafood restaurant that adjoins the Groper Bar.

Despite sitting on a bit of a peninsula surrounded on three sides by water, Port Douglas doesn't have that many restaurants with a good view of the water. On the Inlet certainly does, and facing west across Dickson Inlet there's the added benefit of watching the sun set behind Magazine Island, clouds permitting.

Seafood features heavily on the menu, the platter usually requires advance notice and is based on market prices. No lobster on the plate, but plenty of the local mud crab... delicious. Mud crab can be ordered as a main, there's Tuna steak, Barramundi fillet, and whole Coral trout, and a Spaghetti marinara. An interesting twist is the Seafood Laksa, featuring fish, scallops, prawns etc..

Steak and Chicken dishes are also available.. All mains that don't include market value ingredients are in the $28-$35 range, which is good value considering where you are.
