Features and Facilities
Standard facilities such as car parks, toilets and showers are available, though no grassy foreshore picnic area as local housing literally backs up onto the sand.. There is a concrete track along the foreshore that continues South to Balboa Pier and North to about 36th Street. The track is suitable for walking, jogging and bike riding.Newport Pier is a main feature of the beach. Extending around 750 ft (250m) out to sea, the pier is a very popular fishing spot and a tourist destination in its own right. At the end of the pier is the famous Newport Seafood Restaurant.
Along the beach towards Balboa there are various sporting facilities for beach volleyball and other games, while to the North there are a further eight minor piers of various sizes and repair.
This beach is patrolled during peak times. Beach Lifesaver huts are placed along the beach at regular intervals.
Newport Surf Breaks
Newport is a popular destination for surfers with many surfbreaks along its considerable length. The different breaks work in different conditions, so if there is some swell around chances are you will find something working. Best surf is North of the pier, with inconsistent dumpy swell best suited to bodyboarding south of the pier. Some breaks can get crowded, but the length of the beach means you should be able find an empty break somewhere.
