Description

Dee Why Beach consists of a 1.2km strip of sand, which runs into Long Reef further to the North. The beach faces South East. The Southern corner runs into an extensive rock ledge which is home to three tidal pools. Behind the Southern corner of Dee Why is a residential and commercial area while Dee Why Lagoon is behind the Northern Section.
Dee Why is an Ocean Surf Beach.

Location

Dee Why Beach Beach is 18km North of Sydney. It can be accessed by Car or Bus, off Pittwater Road.
North of Dee Why Beach is Long Reef, West is Dee Why Lagoon, while South is Dee Why Cliff Reserve then Curl Curl Beach.

Name

An Diary Entry from James Meehan, who surveyed the Northern Beaches area around 1815, described the beach with the initials 'DY'. No one knows for sure what the initials stand for, if anything, but the name stuck, sepearating into two words.. .Dee Why, in 1952.

Dee Why has one of the best Point Breaks in Sydney. Entry via the rock shelf, works best in South East winds.
Good fishing along the shore and Southern Rock Platform.


Dee Why Surfbreaks

Dee Why Point is a good right hand point break that works mostly in the colder months. Needs good southerly swell to really get going, offshore wind is NW. Right Hand break that can join with beach breaks in right conditions. Entry on big days is usually from the rockshelf. Surfing can be very competitive here.
